Rubicon's PC Truetype fonts work on any 32-bit version of Windows, including Windows 95, NT, 98, 2000, ME, and XP. They conform to the Microsoft Truetype 1.0 Specification, Revision 1.66. There are no special system requirements.

Rubicon's PC Type1 fonts work on any version of Windows, starting with Windows 3.1. Windows NT, 2000, and XP support Type1 fonts directly. Other versions of Windows require Adobe Type Manager (ATM) to provide Type1 font support.

Rubicon's Mac Type1 fonts work on any version of Mac OS, starting with version 7.0. Mac OS X supports Type1 fonts directly. Other versions of Mac OS require Adobe Type Manager (ATM) to provide Type1 font support. [Return].

Preparing for Font Installation

Rubicon font software is distributed in compressed format, using ZIP for PC's and Stuffit for Mac's. Rubicon recommends that you maintain a copy of the compressed font software in a safe place. Before you install the fonts, you must expand the compressed font software.

The new fonts should be expanded to a temporary folder on disk. After the fonts are installed you can discard the temporary folder. Make a note of the disk drive and path name of the folder containing the new fonts.

Rubicon fonts are provided in PC Truetype, PC Type1, and Mac Type1 formats. Instructions are provided below for installing Truetype and Type1 fonts on Windows or Mac OS. Use of Type1 fonts may require Adobe Type Manager (ATM), depending on what version of Windows or Mac OS you have.[Return]

Windows and Truetype Fonts

Truetype fonts may be installed into any version of Windows, beginning with Windows 3.1. First, note the location where the new (uninstalled) fonts are stored. The name of the disk drive is needed and the folder path, if any. The following instructions are for Windows 2000. Other versions of Windows behave similarly. Do the following:

1. Select Start | Settings | Control Panel. The Control Panel opens.

2. Double-click the Fonts icon. The Fonts dialog box opens.

3. Select File | Install New Fonts. The Add Fonts dialog box opens.

4. Select the drive letter and folder where the new fonts are stored. The system displays the names of the new fonts in the List of Fonts field.

5. Click Select All to install all the new fonts.

6. Select the check box for Copy fonts to Fonts folder.

7. Click OK. Windows installs the new fonts.

For further information on installing Truetype fonts into Windows, refer to the Windows product documentation. [Return].

Mac OS and Truetype Fonts

Truetype fonts may be installed into any version of Mac OS, begining with version 7.0. To install Truetype fonts into Mac OS, locate and identify the Truetype font files, indicated by a suitcase icon with a filename ending in "TT", then drag them into the System folder. Mac OS wil respond, asking for permission to move the font files into the System Font sub-folder. Click OK. The new fonts will not be available to currently running applications until they have been quit and re-launched.

Note: Mac OS X also supports PC Truetype fonts.[Return]

Windows and ATM

Adobe Type Manager (ATM) for Windows is an alternative to the Truetype font rasterizer. ATM is available for all versions of Windows, beginning with Windows 3.0. ATM uses Postscript Type1 fonts rather than Truetype fonts. Note that Windows NT, 2000, and XP support Type1 fonts directly, so that ATM is optional but not required. The instructions which follow are for ATM 4.1 and Windows 2000 Professional. The procedure is similar for other versions of ATM and/or Windows.

First, note the location where the new (uninstalled) fonts are stored: the name of the disk drive and the folder path (folder), if any. Do the following:

1. Close any programs that are in use.

2. Select Start | Programs | Adobe | Adobe Type Managet | Adobe Type Manager 4.1. The Adobe Type Manager dialog box opens.

3. in the Source field, select Browse for Fonts.

4. Select the drive letter and folder where the new fonts are located. The names of the new fonts are displayed.

5. Select the desired fonts.

6. Alick Add. Adobe Type Manager installs the new fonts.

For further information on installing Type1 fonts into Windows with Adobe Type Manager, refer to the Adobe Type Manager product documentation. [Return]

Windows and Type1 Fonts

Most current versions of Windows support Type1 fonts directly, without the need for ATM. This uncludes Windows NT, 2000, and XP. Installing Type1 fonts into these versions of Windows is ths same as installing Truetype fonts. Refer to "Windows and Truetype Fonts" above.[Return]

Mac OS and ATM

Adobe Type Manager (ATM) for Mac OSis an alternative to the Truetype font rasterizer that is provided with Mac OS 7.0 or newer. ATM uses Type1 fonts rather than Truetype. To install Type1 fonts for use with ATM, do the following:

1. Locate the screen font files (look for a suitcase icon) and Type1 font files (look for an icon of a printer with the numeral "1") and drag them into the System folder. Mac OS responds, asking for permission to move the font files into the System Font sub-folder.

2. Click OK. The new fonts are installed, but will not be available to currently running applications until they are quit and re-launched.[Return]

Mac OS X and Type1 Fonts

Mac OS X supports Type1 fonts directly, without the need for Adobe Type Manager (ATM). Installing Type1 fonts into Mac OS X is the same as installing Truetype fonts.22
